Sobe Brown Hair Salon
Pamela Morrisey with Erin O Connor
Pamela Morrissey is the driving force behind her salon “ Sobe Brown“ in Island House, Morrison’s Quay, Cork. Having returned from New York in 2006 where she worked as a stylist for Bumble & Bumble in Manhattan’s fashionable meat packing district and also in ‘Alice’ – a Bumble & Bumble upper east side salon.
Pam opened her dream salon to pursue her own ideas on hairstyling and to provide customers with a luxury salon experience. She brings with her twelve years experience in the industry and an impressive pedigree of work from magazines like “New Woman” and “Time Out NY” to TV shows such as “Ambush Makeover”, Saturday Night Live” and “ Fox News cast. She continues in this vein in Cork working closely with fashion magazines, modelling agencies and photographers in the city.
What age did you start hair dressing ?
I started at 15 in Victor Franks in Cork City, as a ditsy Junior !
When did you move to New York and why ?
At 21 . I always had a hunger for more and there ended up being more than i could have ever imagined. I was highly influenced by New York and wanted to bring home what i had learned there .Being in New York showed me that all these ambitions werent just in my head but a reality. Everyone i had met there was a high achiever and had a hunger that was contagious.
What was your most memorable moment working in Bumble & Bumble in New York?
Styling Jill Stuarts hair.Jill is an iconic designer and it was amazing for me to become her hair dresser. Also working on Saturday Night Live and styling Fox News casts hair.
I got my hair done in Bumble and Bumble a few months ago and was highly impressed! What was it like to work there for so long ?
It was a fantastic experience .As you saw, the building is very modern and the whole system of hair dressing there is completely different to any other salon. It was all about trusting the hair dresser and making the client feel special. Alice McCarney, founder of the famed Alice Hair Salon thought me so much and was such an inspiration.
How would you rate the stress level of your job ?
It can range from 3 to a 9 and a half on an hourly basis !
Why did you want to start your own business?
I wanted to make a difference in the industry. I didnt want to own a typical hair dressers. I wanted to educate people about their hair and look at it in a different light. I wanted to include the client to an extent that they would be included in the Sobe Brown family and culture. I always incorporate fashion with the salon , something which constantly inspires myself and my team, which is why the salon is so heavily involved in fashion shoots and Lockdown Model Agency. I wanted to create the best salon in the world .To give the best hair cuts and colour, the best in costumer service in an atmosphere that carries confidence ,credibility and gratitude. And always be influenced by fashion.
Where did you get the idea for he name Sobe Brown?
it came from Sobe which is short for South Beach in Miami which is a place i adore.
Where do you see youself in 5 years?
My dream is to have a salon in New York and London, aswell as Cork of course. At the moment , i feel like i have the best team in the world working for me . Which evidently reflects the atmosphere in the salon. They influence me every day and the salon would be nothing without them.
Whos your favouraite music artist at the moment ?
Jason Mraz
Fave song ?
Billy Joel just the way u are
What was the last thing you ate ?
A Kit Kat bar out the back !
